EYELID SURGERY

Guidelines before treatment:

  • This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Do not eat, drink or smoke at least 4 hours before surgery.

  • Do not wear lenses.

  • Do not wear any jewellery.

  • Do not take any blood thinning (Marcoumar, Sintrom) or anti-inflammatory medication like aspirin or ibuprofen for 10 days before surgery.

  • To reduce the risk of bruising you can start taking 3 tablets of ARNICA 5 CH 8-hourly for 2 days before surgery. It is best to continue taking them for 7 days after surgery.

  • The morning of your procedure, take a shower with desinfectant soap (iso-Betadine, Hibiscrub, Dettol). After your shower do not wear any makeup, moisturizers, oils, creams, or lotions or deodorant.

  • As smoking has a negative effect on the healing process, it is recommended to stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery until 2 weeks after surgery.

  • Moderate alcohol consumption 2 weeks before the surgery, and stop alcohol consumption 1 day before the surgery.

  • Wear comfortable clothing on the day of surgery, ideally loose-fitting clothes that open in the front and comfortable flat shoes that slip on.

Guidelines after treatment:

  • In order to limit swelling to a minimum you are advised not to sleep lying down. It is necessary to sleep in an upright position to avoid too much swelling of the eye.

  • Do not wet the steri-strips that have been attached to the eye after the operation.

  • Up to 2 to 3 days there may be some discomfort. Some tearing is normal.

  • The following pain killers can be taken the first few days: paracetamol 1g tablet 8-hourly, ibuprofen 400mg tablet 8-hourly and if necessary tramadol 50mg tablet 8-hourly.

  • In the beginning swelling is normal. It will disappear spontaneously after a few days. Using a cool mask or icepack as soon as possible after the operation usually prevents or at least limits the swelling.

  • The eye area will be bruised for at least a week. Wearing large and dark sunglasses can be helpful to camouflage.

  • Stitches will be removed after 5 to 10 days. This can either be done by us or by your own GP.

  • Makeup can be used again as soon as the stitches have been removed.

  • Protect scars well from the sun for 1 year.

  • It is important to take enough rest after the procedure.

  • Sports: Sports that do not cause any shocks (like walking) can be practised after 1 week. Up to 6 weeks after surgery it is best not to practise more active types of sport.

  • Up to 8 weeks after the surgery, it is not recommended to visit a saunau or a wellness.

  • Make sure there is someone to drive you home after your surgery.
